Secure Digital (SD) is a non-volatile storage area card format produced by the SDCARD Connection (SDA) for use in lightweight devices.
The typical was unveiled in August 1999 by joint work between SanDisk, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric) and Toshiba as a noticable difference over MultiMediaCards (MMC), and is among the most industry standard. The three companies made SD-3C, LLC, a corporation that licenses and enforces intellectual property privileges associated with SD storage credit cards and SD variety and ancillary products.
The firms also shaped the SD Connection (SDA), a non-profit group, in January 2000 to market and create SDCARD expectations. SDA today has about 1,000 member companies. The SDA uses several trademarked logos managed and accredited by SD-3C to enforce conformity with its specs and assure users of compatibility.
